Bioinformatics is the application of computer science to the field of molecular biology. Or so wikipedia defines it. As a relitively new field that definition is subject to change.
If you are interested in learning more about the exciting new field of Bioinformatics and a few of its applications, ARC Research Collaborative will be holding a brief introductory class on June 2 @ 7pm.
At the start of the class you will be presented with a question. A biological question that currently does not have an answer. In searching out that answer you will be introduced to various bioinformatics methods and tools. Which will include but not limited to…
- A brief history of molecular biology and bioinformatics
- Refresher of Molecular Biology
- Tour of some free primary sources
- Introduction to various useful databases
- How to build a (phylogenetic) tree.
- Sequence Analysis
- 3D Modeling
At the end of the class, it is my hope that you will leave with a deeper understanding of what bioinformatics is and while you will probably leave with more questions then you walked in with (as is wont to happen it seems in science), you will have the tools to seek out the answers.
Laptops are not required, but may be of interest if you’d like to follow along.
